BISMARCK -- The North Dakota high school boy’ soccer season reaches its apex this week as eight programs converge on Fargo North High School, beginning on Thursday, Oct. 15.
The eight-team field pits seasoned dynasties against hungry underdogs. Here are key storylines and tidbits to follow heading into the quarterfinals
Can the WDA Break the East's Stranglehold?
The Western Dakota Association arrives in Fargo carrying serious motivation after last year’s opening round turned into an Eastern sweep. A season ago, the EDC swept all four state quarterfinals, shutting the WDA entirely out of the semifinal and championship brackets. With two conference champions entering unblemished against North Dakota competition, the West’s battle to punch back begins immediately on Thursday. WDA regular-season champion Minot High leads that charge, but getting multiple Western squads into Friday’s semifinals will mean reversing a tough recent trend on the East's home turf.
Defying the Ballots
Preseason polls offer an early pulse, but both conference champions rewrote the script by finishing the regular season without a single loss to an in-state opponent.
Fargo South (1E, 14-1-2 overall): Despite West Fargo Sheyenne taking the top spot in the EDC preseason coaches poll by three points (60-57, with four first-place votes each), the defending state champion Bruins swept conference play at 14-0-2. Their only blemish came across the river against Moorhead, Minn. Fargo South enters the weekend hunting its eighth state title, driven by an elite backline: the Bruins allowed one goal or none in 15 of their 17 matches while exploding for four or more goals five times.
Minot High (1W, 14-0-2 overall). The Magicians lived up to their preseason billing. Voted No. 1 in the WDA poll with five first-place votes, Minot High went undefeated through conference play behind a relentless, high-powered attack. The Magi scored four or more goals in a match 11 times and averaged 3.8 goals per contest, leaning on potent offensive depth as they chase their first state championship since 2006.
Preseason projections missed big on two programs that peaked when it counted most.
West Fargo Packers (3E, 9-3-4 overall): Slotted down at No. 7 in the EDC preseason poll with just 22 points, the Packers defied expectations to secure the East’s third seed. Making their first state appearance since 2024, the five-time state champions proved their mettle by being one of only two EDC squads to take a point from Fargo South.
Mandan-Bismarck St. Mary’s (4W, 8-5-2 overall): Picked seventh in the WDA preseason poll, the co-op battled through the West to punch its ticket. The bid marks the program’s first state tournament appearance since 2019 and its first-ever under the combined Mandan-St. Mary’s banner.
Championship Pedigrees
The eight-team field features 25 combined state championships: Fargo South (7), Bismarck Century (5), West Fargo (5), Bismarck High (5), Grand Forks Red River (2), and Minot High (1).
While those teams looking to add to their championship harware, a team that is poised to break through is (2E) WF Sheyenne.
The Mustangs, who entered August as the EDC coaches' favorite, are making their third consecutive state tournament appearance. The squad finished third at the state tournament a season ago.
With two of their three losses coming against Fargo South, the Mustangs have the firepower to reach the top of the mountain.4.
Historic Streaks Meet Fresh Faces
Opening day delivers an intriguing contrast in tournament familiarity: Minot High’s 17-Year Run: The Magicians are making their 17th consecutive state appearance, a level of year-in, year-out consistency unmatched across North Dakota. Their quarterfinal opponent, Grand Forks Red River (picked 3rd in the EDC preseason poll), brings plenty of postseason seasoning of its own with seven straight state trips. The Roughriders were runner-up last season.
New Ground for the Co-op: Mandan-St. Mary’s opens against top-seeded Fargo South, pitting a program making its co-op debut at state against the reigning champions on Fargo turf.
The 2-3 showdowns offer intrigue
Bismarck High (3W, 9-4-4 overall), picked third in the WDA preseason poll, was the only Western squad to test an EDC opponent this fall, edging (2E, 9-3-4/10-4-4 overall) Grand Forks Red River 2-1 in late August. The Demons return to state for the first time since 2023.
Bismarck Century vs. West Fargo: The 2W vs. 3E clash pits two five-time state champions against each other. Century (9-4-3 overall)—making its second consecutive state trip (5th place last season) after finishing second in the WDA poll—suffered two of its four losses against unbeaten Minot High. The Pats face a West Fargo side riding high after wrecking preseason expectations.
