Mandan wins first West Region golf title

BISMARCK – Mandan was the best girls' golf team in the WDA during the regular season. That did not change come the postseason. The Braves added another banner to an already-banner season by winning their first West Region Tournament crown on Sept. 25. The program earlier clinched its first WDA regular season title based on scoring average. Bismarck St. Mary's was runner-up. It was the Saints' best finish at regionals since 2017. Century, the defending champion, was third. Dickinson, Minot High and Jamestown also punched their tickets to the Class A Tournament in Grand Forks next month. Mandan senior Anna Huettl was medalist, carding a one-under par round of 71. Fellow senior Ruby Heydt was second with a 77. The top 10 finishers and ties earned all-region tournament honors. Huettl was named region senior athlete of the year while Dean Johs of Mandan was region coach of the year. Other senior athlete nominees were: Ruby Heydt, Mandan; Paige Breuer, Bismarck High; Kambree Hauglie, Century; Olivia Sorlie, Jamestown; and Lauren Back, Legacy. The two-day Class A Tournament is Oct. 2-3 at the Grand Forks Country Club.
