FARGO - It appeared that the (3W) Bismarck High and (2E) WF Sheyenne state quarterfinal on a chilly Oct. 15 night was going to be decided by penalty kicks. But then Sheyenne's Braxton DaSilva got the ball in space with under three minutes of extra time remaining. He made no mistake. DaSilva's long range bullett sailed past the outstretched arms of Demon goalie Ean Marcus. And a joyous Mustang team ran to embrace the junior as he raced over to the WF Sheyenne student section to celebrate. The 1-0 win advanced Sheyenne to the semifinals against WDA champion Minot High. BHS will look to rebound in consolation play against G.F. Red River.
The goal was the only blemish on an otherwise sparkling performance by Marcus. The sophomore made several point-blank stops throughout the match, including a sequence of saves in the opening minutes of the first 10-minute extra time period. The Mustangs controlled much of the territorial advantage throughout the match and did a good job of keeping the Demons' playmakers in check. Sheyenne goalie Jay Youness wasn't as busy, but a few times needed to be on his toes when there was a loose ball near the goal box.
Sheyenne, which is seeking its first-ever state title, improved to 13-3-4 overall. BHS is 9-5-4 overall.
