BISMARCK - Legacy faced a fourth down and one from the Century 46-yard line with 1:50 remaining and trailing 14-6. Conventional wisdom would call for a run. Legacy coach Chris Clements trusted his junior quarterback Weston Kraft to make a play.

Kraft found wide receiver Zaedyn Hochhalter sneaking past Century defenders. The pass was on the money and the junior secured it, and then scampered the remaining 15 yards to the end zone. Tyler Krukenberg's PAT was good and the Sabers' would get one more stop on defense to earn a hard fought 15-14 win over its rival on Oct. 15 at MDU Resources Community Bowl.

The victory clinched a AAA playoff spot and puts the Sabers in line to host a playoff game with a victory next week over Mandan. Century, meanwhile, dropped another close decision. The silver lining was the Pats are also headed for the playoffs. They wrap up regular season against Bismarck High.

Beckham Presley-McKay opened the scoring for Legacy, cutting back to his right and rumbling 19 yards for a first quarter score. The Sabers would extend its lead to 8-0 following a safety.

Century's offense would find its form in the second quarter. Kaden Welstad would feather a pass to Wyatt Nelson for a 28-yard TD. Then, he connected with Josiah Johnson in the corner of the end zone for a 23-yard score. Johnson made the play by reaching over the head of the defender to secure the catch with under a minute to play in the first half.

The defenses dominated the second half as both teams saw drives stall out. Century took over up 14-8 with 5:10 remaining. However, the Pats were forced to punt. Legacy received great field position near midfield. And four plays later was in the end zone, thanks to the heroics of Kraft and Hochhalter on fourth down.

The win, just the second in the all-time series for Legacy, improved its record to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the AAA WDA. Century fell to 2-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
