BISMARCK - Legacy hosted its first-ever Division AAA playoff game on Oct. 30. The Sabers did it in style. Legacy raced out to a 21-0 first quarter lead en route to a dominant 42-7 win over Fargo Shanley.
The Sabers (8-2 Overall) advance to the state semifinals for a second consecutive season. Shanley, which was playing without its standout quarterback Jacob Perkerewicz, ended its season at 6-4.
The Deacons looked out of sorts in the opening quarter as Sam Strand was under center for Perkerewicz, who was on the sidelines in a boot cast. Legacy's physical line didn't give the freshman signal caller much time to drop back and pass. The opening drive ended with a fumble. Legacy would be in the end zone just moments later on Qwentrell Rasmussen's 27-yard pass over the middle from Weston Kraft. Another short possession for Shanley and Legacy was back in the end zone. Beckham Presley-McKay battered his way in from four yards out. The key play of the short drive was a Kraft to Josh Link pass that covered nearly 45 yards. A blocked punt and a fumble return by Mason Duchsherer made it 21-0 with 4:34 left in the opening quarter. The Sabers' offense wasn't done as Josh Link took a reverse and broke a tackle down field for a 44-yard score.
Shanley which entered the the playoffs as one of the most explosive offenses had seven possessions in the opening half. The best opportunity to score came in the final moments of the half, but Legacy's defense stiffened and forced a turnover on downs at the three yard line.
Legacy took a 28-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. Any thoughts of a Shanley comeback ended in the third quarter as Link reeled in a pass from Kraft and skirted down the sidelines for a score. Legacy would again block a punt in Shanley territory. Presley-McKay would cap off the drive with a one-yard run on the final play of the third quarter.
Shanley broke the shutout in the fourth quarter when Michael Hollcraft took a snap from center and squeezed into the end zonewith 7:56 to play. The Sabers would then chew up nearly six minutes before turning the ball back over to Shanley. The Deacons would move the ball back into Legacy territory, but the clock, and the season ran out.
