BISMARCK - Bismarck quarterback Kaden Molenda threw for a pair of touchdown passes on Friday, Oct. 9 against rival Legacy at the MDU Resources Community Bowl. It was his foot, not his arm, however, that was the difference in the game. The junior booted a 46-yard field goal with just under four minutes to play to break a 14-all tie and give BHS a 17-14 WDA victory. The Demons remained unbeaten in the conference and 6-1 overall. Legacy dropped to 2-1 in the WDA and 5-2 overall.
Bismarck High struck first as Molenda found Jack Praska on a curl route in the corner of the end zone from seven yards out in the opening quarter. Legacy's defense made a big play to tie the score as Josh Link stepped in front of an intended Molenda pass to Weston Scott and raced 37 yards for an interception return. Bismarck High would regain the lead when Molenda threw to Najeh Boyd in the flat. The senior wide receiver made a nifty lateral move to shake away from a tackler and lunge into the end zone. The Sabers tied the score early in the third quarter. Weston Kraft broke a handful of tackles and spinned his way in for a score from eight yards out. Both teams defense then dug in to keep the game tied. BHS was able to string a good possession midway thru the final quarter to put itself in Legacy territory. Faced with a fourh-down-and-13, the Demons elected to go for the field goal. And Molenda delivered. Legacy's offense did a good job to move the ball in position for a 238-yard field goal try by Tyler Krukenberg with a couple of seconds remaining. However, the kick was partially blocked.
Bismarck faces Williston, who are still seeking their first win of the season. Legacy will prepare to take on Century, aiming to bounce back in their next matchup.
