MANDAN - Breezy conditions made for challenging volleys and service play at Mandan Middle School Courts on Sept. 14. Host Mandan made enough plays down the stretch to preserve its perfect record with a 4-3 non-conference victory over Century. Mandan improved to 3-0 in the Western Dakota Association and 11-0 overall, while Century fell to 1-2 in the WDA and 7-5 overall.
Mandan's strength in singles play was evident as they secured wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles. Senior Jared Christen remains undefeated this season. Fellow senior Eli Kleinknecht battled from a set down to get a win at No. 3 singles. Century picked up a pair of singles wins. Senior Connor Michela won in straight sets at No. 2 and Beckett Henderson grinded out a three-set victory at No. 4 singles. In doubles play, Century took the win at No. 3, but Mandan earned wins at No. 1 and No. 1. Both matches were tightly-contested.
Next up, Century will visit Williston, who hold a 1-2 WDA record and are 2-8 overall, on September 15. Mandan will meet Minot High also on Sept. 15 in a match that could determine the WDA regular season title. The Magicians are 4-0 in the WDA and 13-0 overall.
