GRAND FORKS - St. Mary's started quick, building a 20-7 lead by halftime and earning a 27-14 non-conference victory at Grand Forks Red River on Sept. 4 at Cushman Field. It was the Saints' first win over the Roughriders since 1995 and snapped a four-game losing skid to GFRR. The win evened St. Mary's record at 1-1 while Red River fell to 0-2.

Cam Hase took a fumble recovery 92 yards to open the scoring for SM. Colin Fleck then found the end zone from one-yard out to extend the lead. Later in the opening half, Marcus Anderson's 43-yard TD reception from Patrick Richter regained the squad's two-possession lead.

Red River quarterback Reese Walters threw for 300 yards on 13 of 26 passing. However, the Saints defense managed to bend but not break. Richter, meanwhile, threw for 182 yards and a pair of scores. Fleck's 70 yards rushing led the squad. The win was big, in the fact, SM's two-time all-state playmaker Beckett Price is out due to injury.

Looking ahead, St. Mary's will face its stiffest test of the season when it takes on a very good Kindred squad, 2-0, on September 11. Grand Forks Red River will aim to bounce back against Minot North, also 1-0, on the same date.
