Eleven schools participated in the meet which also served as the conference meet. The top six place winners in each event as well as any athlete/relay that reaches state qualifying standards were eligible to compete at the state championships.

The 2026 Girls Track and Field season in the Western Dakota Association showcased an impressive array of talent, culminating in a thrilling postseason. Dickinson's early dominance at the March 28 Early Bird meet set the tone for the season, as they outpaced Williston and Dawson County, Montana, with a total of 128 points. The team consistently performed well throughout the season, though they faced stiff competition from established rivals like Century and Bismarck High.
The Shannon Gangl Memorial Invite on March 30 saw Mandan take home the top spot with a commanding score of 178, closely followed by Minot High and Dickinson, both tied at 129. This early season success highlighted Mandan's depth, which would be crucial as the season progressed. The competition intensified with each subsequent meet, including the April 10 Minot Invite, where Legacy emerged as the champion, demonstrating their strength with 170.5 points.
The West Region Track and Field Championships held on May 16 at the Biesiot Activities Center in Dickinson featured intense competition among eleven schools. Century clinched the regional title with 143 points, followed by Bismarck High and Legacy. Notable individual performances included Jilian Quale of Bismarck High, who dominated the sprints, winning both the 100 and 200 meters. Meanwhile, Ruby Ihmels of Century excelled in the distance events, taking first in both the 1600 and 3200 meters.
The state championships from May 21-23 in Bismarck were a showcase of the season's best athletes. Century secured the Class A title with 100 points, narrowly defeating Bismarck High, who finished with 96. Legacy also shone brightly, finishing third with 63 points. The meet saw standout performances from the likes of Jilian Quale, who continued her sprinting dominance, and Ruby Ihmels, who further solidified her status as a distance powerhouse.
Legacy's relay teams were particularly impressive, with both the 400 and 800 meter relays capturing first place. The 400 meter relay team, consisting of Mallory Paul, Cambree Volk, Joanna Guenther, and Jemimah Guenther, clocked in at 47.96 seconds, while the 800 meter relay team finished in 1:40.72. These relay victories underscored Legacy's versatility and depth across all events.
Throughout the season, athletes like Anna Lyles from Mandan and Lily Wilson from St. Mary's made significant contributions with their performances in hurdles and field events. Lyles won the 100 hurdles at the West Region meet, while Wilson excelled in the javelin, showcasing the depth of talent within the WDA.
